The second location of Chicago’s renowned heavy metal burger joint rocks just as hard as the original. The larger space should reduce wait times but don’t expect the lines to get any shorter, the crowds are just as fanatic. So if Iron Maiden, Pantera and Black Sabbath are still just band names to you, then it’s time to acquaint yourself with some of Chicago’s best burgers.

Edzo's Burger Shop

Evanston’s favorite burger shop has made its way to Lincoln Park. Get them griddled with your choice of toppings and don’t forget the Crazy or Taylor Street Fries—loaded with Italian beef gravy and sweet & hot peppers. Finish it off with one of Edzo’s famous hand-dipped milkshakes like the Nutella shake and you’ll be ready for a nice, long nap.

The burger menu is short and simple but the 1/3 pound, organic, grass-fed patties on brioche buns speak for themselves. For vegans, an organic chickpea burger is also offered. The space features reclaimed furniture like chairs made from soda bottles and a South Side church pew, and the music selection is, unsurprisingly, indie rock.

Blues and rock ‘n’ roll-themed Leadbelly is one of the newest additions to the city’s burger scene. Named after blues musician Huddie William Ledbetter, burgers like Black Betty, Salty Dog and Amazing Grace will have you howling for more. The beef is grounded on site, the buns are baked fresh daily and every order comes with a Leadbelly butter cookie. For the big eaters, the 2-pound Titanic burger is shaped like a 14-inch pizza and serves 4-5 people.

It’s not your usual greasy diner fare at Stephanie Izard’s latest spot, and the burgers are definitely atypical. Choose a Slagel beef, turkey, Kilgus goat or veggie patty and compliment it with a set of ingredients that include Korean (kimchi, bacon, egg, spicy mayo), Horseshoe (smoked fries, chili, cheese sauce) and Wing Style (wing sauce, blue cheese, celery, crispy onion). You’ll never look at diner burgers the same again afterwards.

Publican Quality Meats

Despite its popularity, burgers only make an appearance once a week during Burger Night at Publican Quality Meats. It’s a hot commodity but it’s easy to see why. Five ounces of Slagel beef topped with American cheese and a “special sauce” on a Highland Bakery bun bring the crowds in. Look for Burger Night to return some time in the spring.
