Michelin's Bib Gourmand list is revered by travelers as a sign of a quality meal at an affordable price. The 2021 list adds 10 new restaurants while removing five. Altogether, 58 restaurants are represented. This is the tire company’s 10th year in Chicago.
Eater Chicago placed the city's Bib Gourmands on a map to make it easier to visually compare Michelin's selections using geography. This year, inspectors took special interest in international cuisine, highlighting Mexican, Korean, Filipino, Spanish, South Asian, and Chinese-American options across the city.
Most of the previous members who fell off the list closed since September 2019 (Fat Rice, Pacific Standard Time, Passerotto, Two). Pizzeria Bebu in Lincoln Park hasn’t yet reopened after ceasing operations in spring 2020, but remains on the list per Michelin’s pandemic-era policy of holding onto temporarily-shuttered spots that appeared on last year’s list. The River North outpost of True Food Kitchen, a health-focused national chain, was a surprise inclusion in 2020 and did not reappear among the new selections.

As of March 2, Chicago restaurants are permitted to serve customers indoors with a 50 percent maximum capacity per room, or 50 people — whichever is fewer. Regardless, the state requires reservations for both indoor and outdoor dining. However, this should not be taken as an endorsement for dining in, as there are still safety concerns. For updated information on coronavirus cases in your area, please visit the city of Chicago’s COVID-19 dashboard. Studies indicate that there is a lower exposure risk when outdoors, but the level of risk involved with patio dining is contingent on restaurants following strict social distancing and other safety guidelines.
