The politics of Chicago pizza will continue to spark debate. The city has a love-hate relationship with deep dish, attempting to love the hometown dish while not allowing out of towners to pigeonhole the city’s culinary contributions. The city’s thin-crust specialty — tavern style — has its staunch supporters. But while celebrities sort out their feelings, pizzaiolos across the city are going beyond that binary with exciting new restaurants that push boundaries and tastebuds.
The following is just a sampling of the wonderful pizzerias in Chicago. There will be omissions and there will be hurt feelings. When folks think that the “Pizza I Grew Up Eating” (PIGUE) shunned, they take it personally. That emotion is nothing to exploit. Just remember to enjoy more pizza, and to argue less. That way we can live in pizza harmony, even if fans of Detroit and New York sports teams remain awful.
As of February 16, Chicago restaurants are permitted to serve customers indoors with a 40 percent maximum capacity per room, or 50 people — whichever is fewer. At the same time, despite winter weather, a number of Chicago restaurants continue to offer outdoor seating. Regardless, the state requires reservations for indoor and outdoor dining. The level of service offered is indicated on each map point. However, this should not be taken as an endorsement for dining in, as there are still safety concerns. For updated information on coronavirus cases in your area, please visit the city of Chicago’s COVID-19 dashboard. Studies indicate that there is a lower exposure risk when outdoors, but the level of risk involved with patio dining is contingent on restaurants following strict social distancing and other safety guidelines.
