Named after the fact that Evanston was once a dry city and the birthplace of Prohibition, Temperance's taproom celebrates the near suburb's newfound fondness for booze by serving a wide variety of fresh-brewed beer styles, from the Gatecrasher IPA to Greenwood Beach Blonde.

A relaxed and popular taproom on the Ravenswood brewery corridor, Empirical packs in neighborhood crowds for all types for fun, no-frills vibes and creative beers. Styles run from a drinkable cream ale to an imperial IPA to a pale ale with passion fruit. While Empirical is planning to sell or close its new brewpub with a full food menu up in Rogers Park, the taproom is where the beer is freshest. The food offerings are snacks but sometimes food trucks park outside.

The Midwest headquarters to national darling Lagunitas is not only the city's largest brewery, but also boasts an equally spacious brewpub and event space on the South Side. Here, enjoy Little Sumpin' Sumpin', spent grain brownies and live music before taking a tour of the facility.

Former Goose Island brewmaster Jared Rouben, acclaimed for his many collaborations with Chicago's best chefs, has given Pilsen a sleek and decadent brewpub experience like no other. Like a chef brewing beer, Rouben's creations give beer food sensibilities with flavors including caramelized chocolate churro, meyer lemon, and his most famous and decadent brew, the shaved black truffle pilsner. The only food items served are oysters and luxe chocolate cake.

Eris resides inside a former Masonic Temple in Old Irving Park. It’s a stunning brewpub with a neighborhood restaurant feel despite the high ceilings and massive windows. While it’s the city’s first cider house, there are some seriously delicious beers like Foiken Haze, a 2018 Great American Beer Festival medal winner named after co-owner Michelle Foik. There’s vegan- and gluten-free items, too.

One of Chicago’s local favorites recently opened this picturesque taproom right on the Chicago River on the Northwest Side to showcase its popular lagers. Metropolitan’s space is open and minimalist with a riverside deck to sip brews during the warmer months.

Marz founder Ed Marszewski continues to contribute to Bridgeport as the neighborhood of the future with this stylish brewpub in the middle of an industrial park just west of Sox Park. Find local art decorating the walls and DJs playing music that doesn’t suck. Beer nerds won’t have to stand in line for special releases as they can reserve select beer for pick up online. They also pour a cadre of Jungle Boogie (pale wheat with rooibos tea) variants.

This far South Side favorite draws crowds for fun beers, a full food menu, and spirits in a casual space in Beverly. Beers to try here include a PB&J brown ale and a milkshake IPA with peach. The food, which focuses on pizza, emerges from a kitchen designed to look like a food truck. A rooftop deck is under construction.
