Where to Dine on Heated Patios in Chicago

Chicagoans can stand the cold better than most, but it’s a lot easier with a fire pit or heater

It’s cooling off in Chicago, but that doesn’t mean it’s time to head indoors. Midwesterners are always made of sterner stuff and have a tolerance for low temperatures. During 2020, that was put to the test as health officials limited indoor dining due to COVID-19. It remains unclear how the delta variant will affect this fall and winter, but the fire pits and propane heaters that were en vogue in 2020 will return as Chicagoans have a new appreciation for cold weather dining. Check out this list of the city’s best heated patio options.

As of August 20, the city has mandated that everyone wear facial coverings while indoors. For updated information on coronavirus cases, please visit the city of Chicago’s COVID-19 dashboard. Health experts consider dining out to be a high-risk activity for the unvaccinated; the latest data about the delta variant indicates that it may pose a low-to-moderate risk for the vaccinated, especially in areas with substantial transmission. The latest CDC guidance is here; find a COVID-19 vaccination site here.
