Champagne has become a beverage synonymous with specials occasions, so it’s no surprise that the French wine flows during the holidays. Not to be confused with other sparkling wines from around the world — like Italian Prosecco or Spanish Cava — Champagnes from their namesake region in eastern France carry a unique terroir, beloved for their creamy body and notes of toasted brioche.

Typically, these coveted wines cost a pretty penny, but in the name of generosity and the holiday season, a number of Chicago-area restaurants and bars are knocking back prices, even on major labels like Dom and Cristal. Below, where to sip the good stuff at prices that won’t break the bank.

From November 25 through the end of December, Lincoln Park French haunt Mon Ami Gabi will discount Moet Chandon Grand Vintage 2012. The restaurant typically sells the bottle for $180, but for the holidays it drops the price to $120 or $30 per glass.

Walton Street Kitchen + Bar

On Sunday nights from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on the Gold Coast, Walton Street Kitchen + Bar is offering 20 percent off any bottle of Champagne for those who order a plate of fried chicken. Pick from bottles including Andre Clouet Silver Blanc de Noirs for $72 (previously $90), and Bruno Paillard Rosé Premiere Cuvée for $139 (previously $174). Then, on Wednesdays, the restaurant knocks 50 percent off all bottles of wine (bubbles included!) from 4:30 to 10 p.m.

Pick from Taittinger Brut La Francaise NV for $25 a glass, Louis Barthelemy Brut Saphir 2008 vintage for $30 a glass, or Charles Heidsieck Reserve Rosé for $30 a glass.

Chicago’s original bubbles bar is, of course, offering a sweet little Champagne deal. Through the end of the year, pop in for 2004 Louis Roederer Cristal for $48 a glass (note: 2004 vintage will not be listed by the bottle), or Egly-Ouriet Brut Grand Cru for $26 per three-ounce tasting or $38 for a five-ounce glass.

Broken Shaker at Freehand Chicago

This month, Miami export Broken Shaker at the Freehand hotel is pouring G. H. Mumm Grand Cordon Champagne for $15 per glass (regularly $20), and offering bottles for $60 (regularly $90).

RPM Steak and RPM Italian are getting into the Dom deals action with three different pours by the glass. Dom Perignon 2006 is $40 per glass, and Dom Perignon P2 2000 and Dom Perignon Rose 2005 are both $100 per glass. Meanwhile, Charles Heidsieck NV will run $29 by the glass, poured from a magnum.

The Langham hotel’s contemporary American haunt Travelle offers a slew of Billecart-Salmon-focused Champagne deals. The maison’s Extra-Brut NV runs $29 a glass or $145 a bottle, meanwhile the 2008 Extra-Brut runs $45 a glass or $225 a bottle.

Nordic-inspired Elske in the West Loop is offering two noteworthy Champagne deals. Etienne Calsac NV runs $89 a bottle, while Aubry Premier Cru Brut NV costs $20 per glass or $80 per bottle.

Every Monday beginning at 4 p.m. chef Paul Virant’s neighborhood bistro in suburban Hinsdale is discounting select bottles of wine by 50 percent. That list currently includes Jean Vesselle Brut Reserve, which typically sells for $100 regularly, but on Mondays is just $50 bottle.
