After more than a decade in Logan Square, Heavenly Gelato closed in November, but the neighborhood won’t have to wait long for a replacement. Black Dog Gelato, one of Chicago’s top frozen dessert makers, is taking over the space at 2662 N. Sawyer Avenue. Black Dog is known for its gourmet approach to gelato with rotating flavors like brandied apple pie made with brandy from Chicago’s own Rhine Hall.
This would be Black Dog’s third location. There’s the original in Ukrainian Village and another in West Loop. Owner Jessica Oloroso wrote that she wants to open in Logan Square in late spring. She hopes to debut before her corporate, out-of-town competition Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams opens in the neighborhood.
Jeni’s, from James Beard Award-winning cookbook chef Jeni Britton Bauer, is coming to 2522 N. Milwaukee Avenue at the former Mega Mall market. That’s the Logan Apartments complex that will also feature Big Wig Tacos, K-Fire Korean BBQ, and a Target, according to Block Club Chicago. Jeni’s rep says the Logan Square location should open later this year.
Expect more Black Dog-related news in the coming months. Stay tuned for updates.
