First-class Chinese dumplings should debut in the Loop at the end of the month. The owners of Qing Xiang Yuan Dumplings announced its new casual spinoff, JIAO, should open on September 30 at 18 S. Wabash Avenue. Qing Xiang Yuan (QXY) has been a Chinatown fixture since 2015, and ownership has its eyes set on expansion, creating the JIAO name to open more restaurants.

JIAO’s menu will include many QXY favorites, including lamb and coriander; plus shrimp, pork, and leek dumplings. Ownership is keen on innovation. For example, they’re touting new dumpling packaging to keep the food fresh and moist whether customers dine in or carry out. The trays are made of straw and easily recycled. It’s unknown how the packaging will affect soup dumplings, an item that’s notoriously difficult to transport. Dumpling fans know the disappointment of biting into chewy and mushy wrappers after bringing their food home. Perhaps JIAO’s ownership has a trick up their sleeves.

Besides the dumplings, JIAO will serve a robust tea selection including cheese-topped tea, a trend that’s recently made its way through America. Check back for more coverage as opening day approaches.
