On Thursday, more than 60 Chicago bars and restaurants will raise money for the city’s oldest domestic violence shelter. Chicago Industry Night For Domestic Violence benefits Connections for Abused Women and Their Children (CAWC) and since mid-April the roster of participants has doubled to include restaurants from one of Chicago’s most success hospitality companies (One Off Hospitality Group), a brewery (Maplewood), and new Israeli/Mediterranean hot spot Galit.
Participants will donate in various ways. Table, Donkey, and Stick in Logan Square is donating 10 percent of its sales. Kumiko in West Loop is donating $3 per prawn and $3 per seaflower cocktail. Mi Tocaya Antojeria in Logan Square is donating $1 per steak burrito and $1 per margarita. There’s also a Michelin-starred participant: Oriole in West Loop is donating 10 percent of sales. Check out a map of participants here and the full roster below. On Tuesday evening, 16” on Center restaurants including Revival Food Hall in the Loop and Dusek’s in Pilsen joined the roster.
The event spun out of the #MeToo movement. Event organizer Daniella Caruso, a veteran bartender and co-owner of Funkenhausen in West Town, has wanted to foster a hospitality industry in Chicago where workers and owners can better support victims of domestic violence. Caruso has already dropped off educational materials at restaurants and bars. She said there hasn’t been enough to go around.
“CAWC has been overwhelmed by the response,” Caruso said. “They’re kind of scrambling to get enough stuff to pass out.”
Caruso singled out Cleo’s, the West Town bar up the street from Funkenhausen. Management is teaming up with American Bocce Co. and holding its kickoff event for the season on Thursday. They’ll donate all money from bocce games to the cause.
It’s been a learning experience for participants who didn’t know about CAWC’s work, and for Caruso. She acknowledged that the participants are all on the North Side. That’s something she wants to work on next year as she plans to make the event an annual occurrence.
