The owner of LiteHouse Whole Food Grill and Mikkey’s Retro Grill is opening a soul food restaurant next week in Hyde Park. It’s called the Soul Shack and features items like jerk chicken made with Cornish hens, braised short ribs, and lemon pepper-fried okra. The restaurant is scheduled for a Sunday opening at 1368 E. 53rd Street.
The restaurant is from Rico Nance who opened LiteHouse in 2013. LiteHouse focuses on healthier dining in a fast-casual setting. Nance moved to a larger location in 2017 on 55th Street. For folks who enjoy a burger, Nance also opened Mikkey’s, a throwback to the greasy spoons of yesteryear.
Soul Shack is a sit-down restaurant with table service. Entrees range from $15 for chicken and waffles to $42 for the surf & turf mix of grilled salmon with lamb chops or short ribs. It’s another addition to Hyde Park’s dining scene, one that has seen new restaurants including Bibliophile and Virtue in recent months.
Nance wasn’t immediately reached for comment, but the story will be updated if he responds. Regardless, Soul Shack is scheduled for a Sunday opening in Hyde Park.
