Saturday’s opening day in Lakeview for Fancy Plants Cafe, the city’s tiny new restaurant serving vegan pastries and Dark Matter coffee which will also host upscale meat- and dairy-free dinner pop-ups. The cafe’s owned by chef Kevin Schuder who runs a catering business and has collaborated with vegan restaurant Kitchen 17, developing the Lakeview spot’s brunch menu.
The menu at 613 W. Briar Place will change as Schuder gets a better pulse on what the neighborhood wants. Initial items include cinnamon rolls, morning glory muffins, blueberry muffins, “huge” chocolate chip cookies, walnut orange shortbread cookies, almond cherry granola bars, “bacon” & “cheese” scones, coffee cakes, apple hand pies, pear cupcakes with lemon ginger frosting, chocolate babka, soups, breakfast sandwiches, and wraps.

The cafe hosted dinner on New Year’s Eve, serving the kind of fancy and composed plates that Chicago vegans seldom see. Schuder hopes to host similar dinners at the cafe on a weekly basis later in the year. While Fancy Plants is counter service, the special dinners will have servers bring food to the customers at the 20 seats inside.
The start of 2019 is a great time to resolve to reduce meat intake and Fancy Plants has Chicago covered. Stop by starting on Saturday morning. Take a look at the menu below.
Fancy Plants Cafe, 613 W. Briar Place, (415) 794-8707, open 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, hours will expand later in January.
