— The far South Side will get in on one of the city’s favorite summer pastimes — a rooftop deck. Popular Morgan Park brewpub Open Outcry Brewing Co. announced plans and renderings for an elevated outdoor space on social media, although there’s now word yet when it will open — only that it’s “coming soon.” Stay tuned for more details.
— The Chicago Riverwalk will grow to the east and include more restaurants and bars with Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s new two-year, $10 million plan for “Riverwalk East” on the little-used stretch from State Street to Lakeshore Drive, the Tribune reports. Expect new gateways, a new walkway, public art, a new glass elevator, as well as new and expanded food and beverage businesses including tacos and margaritas from Urban Kayaks Cantina, the previously reported Riverwalk location of The Northman, and a glass expansion of Island Party Hut with a retractable roof that will allow it to be open year-round.
— Emporium Popups in Logan Square is bringing a temporary Three Floyds Brewing taproom to the city. From Friday, August 10 until August 26, 12 taps will pour beer from the iconic Indiana brewery at the “Cimmerian Ark of Carcosa” pop-up at 2367 N. Milwaukee Avenue which will also feature “elements inspired by Conan the Barbarian, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and the world of Dungeons & Dragons,” a news release states and the Tribune reports. Also expect one-night-only events during that time including rare beer nights and an Alpha King comic book signing with Nick Floyd and Brian Azzarello.
— Funkenhausen, the long-awaited highly-anticipated West Town German restaurant from ex-Carriage House chef Mark Steuer, will finally open on Friday, August 10, the Tribune reported. Originally slated to open last fall, Steuer and team will twist German cuisine with Southern ingredients in a beer hall-esque space at 1709 W. Chicago Avenue. — And finally, Quiote will host the founder of one of Mexico’s most-acclaimed chocolatiers — Daniel Reza Barrientos of La Rifa Chocolatería — on August 15 for a tasting and educational experience about cacao. Tickets cost $22 and are available here.
