Ashok Selvam is the editor of Eater Chicago and a native Chicagoan armed with more than two decades of award-winning journalism. Now covering the world of restaurants and food, his nut graphs are super nutty.

Michigan Avenue’s new food hall, with offerings from the owners of Au Cheval, should open in November. Sitting on the fifth and sixth floors inside the 900 North Michigan Shops, Aster Hall will feature 16 stations with ramen, tacos, sushi, hot dogs, and more. Hogsalt, the owners of Green Street Smoked Meats and 3 Greens Market, will provide the food.

Management will call the food stations inside the 22,000-square-foot space “vaults.” Hogsalt founder Brendan Sodikoff said “vault” isn’t a reference to Hogsalt’s Doughnut Vault (which incidentally will have a location on the ground floor).

“Each food offering is recessed within multiple arches,” Sodikoff texted. “They are not freestanding food stations. Vault was the best descriptor.”

Aster Hall’s customers could order items like chowder in bread bowls and vegan bowls from kiosks located throughout the shopping center or via smartphones. The full menu will be released at a later date. It’ll also have alcoholic drinks.

“It’s a big and beautiful exciting project for sure,” Sodikoff texted. “It represents years of work, planning, and commitment to realize a space like that.”

AvroKO designed the space. The firm’s popular with the Boka Restaurant Group having designed restaurants like Swift & Sons and Momotaro in Fulton Market. Sodikoff is impressed. He added that the project will add a tremendous amount of life and energy to Chicago’s iconic Magnificent Mile.

“Chicago has tremendous innovators in F&B all across the city,” he texted. “We are just doing our part and participating in making the city a destination for hospitality.”

The 900 North Michigan Shops is the 465,000-square-foot shopping center on Michigan Avenue. When Hogsalt debuted eight years ago, not many would have foretold the company would open a food hall.

“I don’t tend to think about the future or even make long-term goals,” Sodikoff texted. “I try to do the best with what’s in front of me and be fully present for it.”

It’s August, but looks like holiday shoppers will have a new spot to take shelter off Michigan Avenue this year. Check back for updates.
