Customers will be able dine where eagles dare later this summer up on the 16th floor of the Trump International Tower and Hotel when Terrace 16 Restaurant & Bar, the replacement for Michelin-starred Sixteen opens. A news release announced the new name for the restaurant which converts the 200-seat patio space once reserved for private use and opens it up to the general public. There’s no announced opening date for the restaurant at 401 N. Wabash Avenue, but they’ve released a trailer touting a debut sometime this summer.
Terrace 16 Opening This SummerComing Summer 2018

Sixteen was a two-Michelin-star recipient before it closed in April, a victim of sluggish business. One restaurant employee said business was down on weekdays by as much as 40 percent in recent months. Some Chicagoans are still unhappy with the president’s name emblazoned across the outside of the building. President Trump has also been outspoken with negative remarks about the city. The new restaurant name gives the space a chance for a fresh start. The hoopla surrounding new openings may distract diners who may not know they’re making a visit to Trump Tower. The building’s management has been omitting the president’s name in real estate listings in attempt to lure new restaurants inside the building. The outdoor space was actually known as the Terrace at Trump before Sixteen closed. None of the food and beverage choices inside the building bear his name.
Restaurant staff have stressed how opening up the terrace would help create a more-cohesive space, meshing it better with the lavish 100-seat dining room. They retain chef Nick Dostal who helped maintain a high level of luxury inside the fine dining restaurant during his tenure.
Dostal is creating a new menu of small plates, appetizers, and large entrees. Sample dishes include ora king salmon (charred cucumber, deli spices, dill yogurt), garden toast (wasabi tobiko, charred scallion, spring peas), sweet corn pasta (chanterelle, chili pepper), tagliatelle (lemon ricotta, egg yolk, bottarga), crispy chicken (potato salad, hot sauce), and black cod (green onion sauce, cipollini onions, patty pan squash).
Restaurant brass is promising more details in the coming weeks including a full menu. Come back for more information as it’s released.
