BELMONT GARDENS— A new coffee shop with an interesting backstory in helping women is opening over the weekend. Check out Cafe Fenix’s grand opening event page. Status: Opening on Sunday, 2959 N. Pulaski Road.

IRVING PARK— There’s a new Starbucks open at Six Corners. It’s a drive-thru. Status: Certified open, 4118 N. Cicero Avenue.

LINCOLN PARK— Tapster has opened its second location, bringing a pour-your-own beer bar to Lincoln Park and nearby DePaul University. Ownership took over the former Wrightwood Tap. Status: Certified open, 1059 W. Wrightwood Avenue.

LINCOLN SQUARE— The Priory Bar & Kitchen is opening this weekend with Cornish pastries and other favorites from England. There’s also a full bar. Status: Opening on Saturday, 5130 N. Western Avenue.

LOGAN SQUARE— The owners of Trike Thai Noodles & Sushi have opened a second restaurant, according to Block Club Chicago. It’s called Red Wheels Noodle Restaurant and they’ve taken over the former Q-Tine space. The menu is full of rice bowls, catering to a quick lunch crowd. Status: Certified open, 2339 N. Milwaukee Avenue.

MAYFAIR— A new North Side coffee shop pours Dark Matter coffee. SoundBite Coffee is open inside Fort Knox Studios, shared music recording space. Status: Certified open, 4255 N. Knox Avenue

WEST LOOP— The wndr museum, where former Moto chef Richie Farina offers interactive food experiences, is now open. Status: Certified open, 1130 W. Monroe.

ORLAND PARK— PDQ, a fast-casual fried chicken chain, has opened a suburban Chicago location in Orland Park. It’s the chain third location in the state. Status: Certified open, 15646 LaGrange Road, Orland Park

September 14

BRONZEVILLE— A new Wing Stop has opened on the South Side. In case you didn’t know, it serves chicken wings. Status: Certified open, 456 E. 35th Street.

KENWOOD— President Obama’s favorite pizza spot, Italian Fiesta Pizzeria, has opened a fourth location. The chain’s been around since 1951. Status: Certified open, 1400 E. 47th Street.

LAKEVIEW— Fast-casual Indian food comes to Broadway and Belmont courtesy of Bombay Wraps. It’s part of a larger expansion plan for the owners. Status: Certified open, 3149 1/2 N. Broadway Street.

LINCOLN PARK— The former Crossing space into a bar with a tailgate-inspired menu. It’s called Broken Barrel Bar and it’s from Wine Not Hospitality. There’s also a beer garden and private event space. Status: Certified open, 2548 N. Southport Avenue.

PILSEN— A new Mexican restaurant opened this week that some customers believe serves some stand-out fried chicken. Casa Indigo appears to be the restaurant offshoot of the Rebel Owl catering company. Certified open, 1314 W. 18th Street.

STREETERVILLE— Another location of swanky Hamptons-inspired restaurant and bar Hampton Social has arrived in Streeterville. It’s got a covered patio. Status: Certified open, 164 E. Grand Avenue.

STONY ISLAND PARK— The Full Slab, a barbecue spot that’s been around for years, has a new restaurant with brisket, rib tips, and more. Status: Certified open, 8430 S. Stony Island.

WEST TOWN— Split-Rail reopens tonight as chef Zoë Schorr has refined the restaurant’s focus from American comfort food to fried chicken. Status: Certified open, 2500 W. Chicago Avenue.

EVANSTON— An unusual partnership has emerged between BopNGrill, the Korean burger spot with locations in Rogers Park and Lakeview, and the owners of Belmont Army, the longtime former surplus and hipster clothing store. It’s called 10qChicken and serves panko-crusted chicken sandwiches, wings, and bowls. Status: Certified open, 816 Church Street.


September 7

BOYSTOWN— The former New Tokyo Japanese restaurant has been replaced by Legend Tasty House, the chain that has a Chinatown location. They serve Thai rolled ice cream. Status: Certified open, 3149 N. Broadway Street.

JEFFERSON PARK— The owners of Old Warsaw, the venerable Polish smorgasbord that closed earlier this summer in Harwood Heights, have downsized to open Polish Paczki Cafe, a spot that features traditional Polish sweets, as well as items like pork chops. They’ve taken the long-shuttered Oven Fresh Bakery spot at Harlem and Foster. Status: Certified open, 7210 W. Foster Avenue.

LINCOLN SQUAREPasta Passion has taken over the Costello’s space in Lincoln Square. Status: Certified open, 4647 N. Lincoln Avenue.

NOBLE SQUARE— The owner of Flip, the short-lived burger spot near Ashland and Division, has made room for a new hot dog and burger spot called Wilson’s Dogs. It also has pizza puffs and a vegan menu. Block Club Chicago has the details. Felipe Caro said he still owns the spot, but a new duo — Jeffrey Wilson and Barbara McGrew — run the restaurant. It’s a short-term agreement, but hopefully they can make it last, said Caro. Status: Certified open, 1141 N. Ashland Avenue.

HOMEWOOD— Vice District Brewing has opened its second facility, a follow-up to its South Loop location. Status: Certified open, 18027 Dixie Highway, Homewood.


August 31

FULTON MARKET— The owners of Wasabi in Logan Square have transformed some basement space inside Ramen Takeya and opened a restaurant within a restaurant. It’s called Omakase Takeya, and it’s a seven-seat spot with a $130-$135 per person menu. Status: Certified open, 819 W. Fulton Market, inside Ramen Takeya.

THE LOOP— The space won’t be fully open until spring, but the city’s first cider bar has opened a second bar on the Chicago Riverwalk. Northman Beer & Cider Garden has a small menu of sausages, plus a big menu of cider and beer. Status: Certified open, 233 E. Wacker Drive.

EVANSTON— After closing in April, ending a 16-year run, Prairie Moon has unveiled a new location. The family-friendly menu features classic American food. Status: Certified open, 1635 Chicago Avenue, Evanston.

SKOKIE— Baghdad Family Restaurant is back open in the suburbs. An LTHForum poster noticed, and they’ve been closed for five months. Status: Certified open, 4839 Oakton Street, Skokie


August 24

CHINATOWN— Inside Chinatown’s Richland Center is another new tea spot bringing cheese caps to Chicago. Elitea joins Bingo Tea bringing this new trend to the city. Status: Certified open, 2002 S. Wentworth Avenue.

LINCOLN SQUARE— A landlord dispute forced Baker Miller to find a new home and the popular bakery and cafe moved into a new location in the same neighborhood. The new location has a patio and a bigger menu. Status: Certified open, 4655 N. Lincoln Avenue.

HEART OF CHICAGO— Ghin Khao Fried Rice has replaced a Mexican restaurant south of UIC. It specializes in Thai food. Status: Certified open, 2128 W. Cermak Road.

RAVENSWOOD— There’s a new juice bar and Asian restaurant called Sunshine Asian Cuisine. It also serves bubble waffle ice cream cones. The menu is Chinese-American with a dash of Thai. Status: Certified open, 4649 N. Damen Avenue.

ROGERS PARK— A new Thai rolled ice cream parlor, Icylicious Ice Cream Rolls, has opened on the North Side. It also has milk tea and slushies. Status: Certified open, 6750 N. Sheridan Road.

ROSCOE VILLAGE — The Riverview Tavern has been reborn as The Reveler under new ownership. Last Call Tavern Group also owns the Butcher’s Tap in Lakeview and Full Schilling in Wrigleyville. There are 96 taps here and the group upgraded the AV system, according to a news release. There also food, with wings, fried Cuban sandwiches that use wonton wrappers, wood-fired pizza, and more on the menu. Status: Opening Saturday, 3404 N. Damen Avenue.

SOUTH LOOP— There’s a new Starbucks in the South Loop inside the new Hilton Garden Inn. Status: Certified open, 123 E. Cermak Road.

WICKER PARK— Don’t let summer go at Eli’s Ark, a new gelato shop that specializes in animal-shaped scoops, just like the Biblical name would led customers to believe. Block Club Chicago has the scoop. Status: Certified , 1843 W. North Avenue.

August 17

AROUND TOWN— Naoki Fried Chicken, the delivery and pickup-only restaurant from Lettuce Entertain You’s Naoki Sushi, starts taking orders today at 5:30 p.m. Head here for the menu and more info. Status: Opening tonight, 2300 N. Lincoln Park West.

BUCKTOWN— The long-awaited successor to neighborhood favorite Silver Cloud officially opened its doors today at 3 p.m. Check out photos here and the food menu below for Tricycle, the nostalgic and casual new neighborhood beer bar and eatery. Status: Certified open, 1700 N. Damen Avenue.

LINCOLN PARK— Lincoln Parkers now have an Italian restaurant whose owner believes serves an entirely new style of pizza in Chicago. Casati’s Pizza Vino, owned by Stefani’s vet Stefano Casati, also offers housemade pastas, steaks, seafood, and more executed by chef Christian Fantoni inside the former Standard Market Grill space on Fullerton. Take a look around here. Status: Certified open, 444 W. Fullerton Parkway.

RIVER NORTH— Three-foot-long pizzas, signature meatballs, ciabatta garlic bread, affordable wines, and more are on the menu at Victory Italian’s new location in River North. It’s run by former Rosebud chef Joe Farina. Status: Certified open, 434 W. Ontario Street.

SOUTH LOOP— Showroom Food Hall, the new dining option inside the Marriott Marquis Chicago, opens tomorrow with five food vendors including Revolution Coffee Counter and Hot Licks. Status: Opening Saturday, 2121 S. Prairie Avenue.

WEST LOOP— Department of Coffee and Social Affairs, the British-based coffee shop chain that landed in Chicago in October on Diversey Parkway, now has a second Windy City location inside Presidential Towers. Status: Certified open, 555 W. Madison Street.

WEST LOOP— One of the year’s hottest restaurants — Gibsons’ multi-level Italian steakhouse in the River Point building just west of the river — now houses a coffee and grab-and-go cafe too. Gibsons Italia Cafe lives on the second floor and serves sandwiches including the Italian salumi and the Mediterranean tuna, salads, Gibsons’ house coffee blend, baked goods and more on weekdays from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Check out the menu and a photo below. August 10

CHINATOWN— Cream cheese-capped tea has come to Chicago thanks to Bingo Tea. It’s a trend that’s just permeating the city. Status: Certified open, 2150 S. Archer Avenue.

LOGAN SQUARE— Pretty Cool Ice Cream launches today in Logan Square as acclaimed pastry chef Dana Salls Cree and Bang Bang Pie’s Michael Ciapciak open a novelty shop near California and Fullerton. While Salls Cree’s ice cream recipes are famous nationwide (she wrote a cookbook, Hello, My Name Is Ice Cream: The Art and Science of the Scoop), the store is focusing on, for now, popsicles. This isn’t a scoop shop. Want a popsicle with potato chips? This is the place. Status: Certified open, 2353 N. California Avenue.

EAST VILLAGE— A new Thai restaurant is open inside the former Bricola spot. Tai Nang is opening this afternoon, reported Block Club Chicago. Its menu includes a few Vietnamese dishes, too. Status: Certified open, 937 N. Damen Avenue.

COMPTON HILLS— City eaters can take a 90-minute car ride to Compton Hills for Scottish food at Balmoral. The Tribune spoke with the owner, who grew up in Scotland. The insides are modeled after a castle, and it has traditional fare — but there’s no mention of haggis. Status: Certified open, 40W099 IL Route 64, Campton Hills.

ELMHURST— Fry The Coop is expanding its suburban fried chicken empire. After opening in Oak Lawn, ownership has brought Nashville hot chicken to Elmhurst. Status: Certified open, 623 W. North Avenue, Elmhurst.

August 3

CHINATOWN— A new ramen shop is emerged in Chinatown. Shinya Ramen House has opened with late-night hours. Status: Certified open, 3240 S. Halsted Street.

HYDE PARK— Saucy Porka has opened a second location to join its first in the Financial District. Ownership is serving similar Latin-Asian fusion dishes as the original. Guy Fieri has made a visit to celebrate the opening. Status: Certified open, 1164 E. 55th Street

THE LOOP Bridgeport Coffee has opened a downtown location. Since it’s just a block south of Route 66, ownership named a blend after the stretch of road. Status: Certified open, 73 E. Jackson Boulevard.

RIVER NORTH— The chef behind Three Aces in Little Italy and Charlatan in West Town has made a comeback. Good Measure brings a dose of punk rock attitude to the bar and restaurant scene. Status: Certified open, 226 W. Chicago Avenue

WEST LOOP— Teddy Gilmore, whose projects included Nouveau Tavern, has opened a new restaurant called DrinkHaus Supper Club. It features Cajun and creole cooking and signature drinks. Status: Certified open, 820 W. Jackson Boulevard.

WICKER PARK— The former Crocodile Lounge has been taken over by the Evil Olive team. Little Olive is a new sports bar near the heart of Wicker Park. Status: Certified open, 1540 N. Milwaukee Avenue.

July 27

LAKEVIEW— The rebooted Schoolyard Tavern officially makes its debut on Sunday. The sports bar was sold by Four Corners to the owner of Links Taproom. It’s been closed since June and will have a tweaked decor and new menu. Status: Certified open, 3258 N. Southport Avenue.

LOGAN SQUARE— Muffins, croissants, and breads are available at Pan Artesanal, a new bakery in Logan Square. Status: Certified open, 3724 W. Fullerton Avenue.

LOGAN SQUARE— The former Suite 25 sports bar has been reborn as Taste of Havana, a new Cuban restaurant and bar. Status: Certified open, 2529 N. Milwaukee Avenue.

WEST TOWN— Mexican food has returned to the space formerly occupied by Shaman by Chilam Balam. The new restaurant is called Calavara, reported Block Club Chicago. While Shaman did small plates like its big sibling in Lakeview, Calavara will serve more of a traditional Mexican-American menu with tacos, burritos, carne asado, and more. Status: Certified open, 1438 W. Chicago Avenue.

UPTOWN— Macarons and other French goods are the name of the game at T’oui Macaron and Patisserie. The owners of banh mi maker Ba Le have converted its cafe into a mecca of pastries, reported Uptown Update. Status: Certified open, 5018 N. Broadway Street.

July 20

CHINATOWN— French-Asian bakery chain Tous Les Jours has opened its first city of Chicago location. An array of pastries, breads, sandwiches, cakes, and non-alcoholic beverages are available. Status: Certified open, 2144 S. Archer Avenue.

THE LOOP— The BMO Harris Bank building on Monroe Street has a new spot serving java from a rotating selection of acclaimed roasters that’s aptly named Tellers Coffee. The 40-seat space uses beans from Intelligentsia, Metric, Big Shoulders and more to create interesting drinks such as a rosemary citrus latte. Pastries from Hewn Bakery are also available. Status: Certified open, 111 W. Monroe Street.

WEST LOOP— The far West Loop has Chicago’s newest Korean Barbecue restaurant. Soju BBQ serves a menu of Korean classics, bento boxes, and of course barbecue. It’s BYO for now. Status: Certified open, 36 S. Ashland Avenue.

BERWYN— The near-southwest burb has a new Italian deli. Rachel’s Cafe & Deli also serves pizza, Italian beef, pasta salad and more. Status: Certified open, 7001 Roosevelt Road, Berwyn.

CICERO— Down the street from Rachel’s is a new spot too: a breakfast and lunch diner named Brasas Pancake House. Pancakes, omelets, crepes, sandwiches, burgers, and more are on the menu at this no-frills restaurant. Status: Certified open, 6033 Roosevelt Road, Cicero.

ORLAND PARK— Gourmet nitrogen and Thai rolled ice cream spot Tasty Freeze has a new location in Orland Park named Tasty Chill. An array of ice cream blends and flavors are available for customization, plus bubble tea, smoothies, milk shakes and more. Status: Certified open, 31 Orland Square Drive, Orland Park.

July 13

BUCKTOWN— The wood oven will heat up next week for the owners of Maple & Ash when they open their new restaurant. Etta will feature wood-fired pizza, pasta, mains and more from chef Danny Grant in a more casual atmosphere compared to the ritzy Gold Coast steakhouse. Ownership razed the building that housed the Southern for new construction. The elevated terrace will open at a later date. It’s one of the summer’s most anticipated openings. Status: Opening on Monday, 1840 W. North Avenue.

LAKEVIEW— The Breakfast House, a West Town morning/afternoon restaurant, has opened its second location. Ownership took over a space that’s rotated through many spots the last few years, including Temple Bar and Beef & Barley. Status: Certified open, 3001 N. Ashland Avenue.

MAG MILE— Wow Bao opened another tech-enabled, self-service location to serve Asian dumplings and more. This spot relocated from 175 W. Jackson Boulevard. Status: Certified open, 200 N. Michigan Avenue.

PILSEN— A new Chinese restaurant, Happy Panda, has opened. The menu features several Chinese-American standbys. Status: Certified open, 1343 W. 18th Street.

RIVER NORTH— The second location of Brightwok opens on Sunday with abbreviated hours. The fast-casual restaurant uses quality ingredients in an assembly line fashion where customers pick proteins, sauces, etc. This new location is smaller than the original and will focus more on carry outs. Status: Opening on Sunday, 631 N. State Street.

RIVER WEST— The second location of Stax Cafe is open northwest of the Grand/Halsted/Milwaukee intersection. The Taylor Street breakfast spot features a sidewalk cafe and brunch cocktails. Status: Certified open, 522 N. Milwaukee Avenue.

WEST LOOP—The Beaver’s Coffee + Donuts location at Chicago’s French Market has been converted to a location of the Dapper Doughnut chain. Beaver’s five food trucks have also been rebranded, according to a news release. Status: Certified open, 131 N. Clinton Street.


July 6

LAKEVIEW — Madison, Wisconsin-based Pancake Cafe has opened its first Chicago location. It serves breakfast and lunch, and is the mini-chain’s fourth location. Status: Certified open, 3805 N. Broadway Street.

RIVER NORTH— Limitless Coffee & Tea has opened a location inside the Marlowe Luxury Apartments on Wells Street. It features the same food menu as Limitless’ West Loop location. The chain is from Matt Matros, the founder of Protein Bar. Status: Certified open, 675 N. Wells Street.

STREETERVILLE— Tiki Snack Shack is billed as Chicago’s “first floating food shack.” Cubano sliders, coconut shrimp, and more are available along the lakefront between Monroe and DuSable Harbors. Status: Certified open, along the lakefront path.

WEST ROGERS PARK— A new Middle Eastern/Mediterranean restaurant serving halal meat has opened. Bamyan Kabob features lamb shanks, kebobs, and more. Status: Certified open, 5701 N. California Avenue.

June 29

AROUND TOWN— Pink Taco, River North’s eccentric Mexican barstaurant, has debuted a taco truck. It’s named Brandy and is a 26-foot truck serving burritos, chili fries, tacos, and quesadillas. Status: Certified open, use the website for the location.

GLADSTONE PARK— A new Mexican restaurant, Casa De Luna, serves mariscos, carne asada, and more. Check out the menu here. Status: Certified open, 5481 N. Northwest Highway.

ROGERS PARK— Tbaar, a bubble tea specialist based out of New York that also serves juices and smoothies, has debuted on the North Side. The brand already has Chicago locations in Chinatown and on Taylor Street. Status: Certified open, 1223 W. Devon Avenue.

ROGERS PARK— The latest outlet of Argo Tea has opened its doors near Loyola University’s main campus. It also has a patio. Certified open, 6576 W. Sheridan Road.

EVANSTON— A new Texas-style barbecue carry-out spot is open in the suburbs. Falcon Eddy’s Barbecue is from the owners of Bat 17, an Evanston sandwich shop. The Daily Northwestern caught up with the owner. Status: Certified open, 825 Church Street.

OAK PARK— Raw fish bowls and trendy giant sushi rolls are available at the newest location of Poke Burrito. It offers a buy one get one free promotion for customers today (Friday). Status: Certified open, 1025 Lake Street, Oak Park.

June 22

AUSTIN— Brown Sugar Bakery has opened a third location following success at Navy Pier and the South Side. Find German chocolate, red velvet cakes, and more on the West Side. Status: Certified open, 4800 W. Chicago Avenue.

FULTON MARKET— The hoagies have hit Fulton Market as Taylor Gourmet has opened its second Chicago location. The sandwich maker has a seasonal menu, and also serves burgers. Take a look at the summer menu below. Status: Certified open, 177 N. Morgan Street.

IRVING PARK— Some restaurants have started fashioning waffles from churros, and now a North Side restaurant is centering a concept around the item. The Churro Waffle is a family-friendly lunch and breakfast spot. Block Club Chicago has details on its menu. Status: Certified open, 2845 W. Irving Park Road.

LINCOLN SQUARE— A new assembly-line style restaurant, Sweet Pepper Venezuelan Food Bar, serves arepas and more. Status: Certified open, 2604 W. Lawrence Avenue.

PILSEN — A new coffee shop has debuted in Pilsen, The Step Down Cafe. They serve Big Shoulders coffee, and Block Club Chicago spoke with the owner. Status: Certified open, 2023 S. Racine Avenue.

RIVER NORTH— The new restaurant inside the Godfrey Hotel certainly doesn’t focus on dinner. Find brunch served all day, seven days a week at the Brunchroom. Status: Certified open, first floor at the Godfrey, 127 W. Huron St.

UPTOWN— The owners of Snow Junkie have finally open its Vietnamese restaurant on Argyle. Hong Ngu has spent two years of planning, and Uptown Update reported that it’s finally open. Status: Certified open, 1113 W. Argyle Street.

RIVER NORTH— The changes at Eataly Chicago continue with the debut of summer seaside-inspired restaurant called Sabbia. It’s taking over the space occupied by La Piazza and Il Pesce. It’s coastal-inspired dining with meat, fish, pasta, and even oyster boats. Status: Certified open, Eataly Chicago second floor, 43 E. Ohio Street.
