The Gringo, the new taqueria and beer garden taking over the Grandview Tavern in West Town, will open next week. Customers will find hipster churros topped with ingredients like Pop Rocks candies and ancho chili chocolate sauce, as well as flaming queso fundido. The star attraction is the 60-seat back patio that hosts its own back bar.
The opening date is Thursday, June 7 at 1202 W. Grand Avenue. The bar is the third restaurant from the owners of AMK Kitchen Bar in Bucktown and Nosh & Booze in the West Loop. They’ll serve fancy boozy slushies and margaritas. Yes, they’ll have froze.
Chef Barney Smith created a menu with 10 tacos including two vegetarian options. There’s also a quesadilla with habanero honey-glazed bacon and fried chicken nachos. The 10 churros on the menu include one topped with Girl Scout cookies (Samoas). While fun and light hearted, given the Gringo’s name, they’re not really interested in authenticity.
The space dates back decades, and AMK feels they can fill a neighborhood niche. Take an early peek at the space and read the menu below. The Gringo opens on Thursday.
