Those walking down Wells Street in Old Town could easily miss it, but the third location of Small Cheval opened over the weekend. Customers have to duck between two buildings to find the restaurant at 1345 N. Wells Street. The restaurant serves Small Cheval’s classic double stacks, an iteration of the Au Cheval burger that ranks among the most-popular burgers in Chicago and the entire country.
While there’s little signage currently to alert burger lovers of its presence along Wells, Small Cheval will look different after Chicago thaws out from winter. The driveway space leading up to the entrance affords room for outdoor seating, and Hogsalt Hospitality’s Brendan Sodikoff confirmed the Old Town location will have patio seating for 100. It’ll also serve alcoholic beverages. Fans of al fresco dining have long flocked to Old Town for a variety of options along Wells Street. Small Cheval gives them a new option along this classic Chicago corridor.
Inside the restaurant there’s a few communal tables and five stools against the front window. Customers will find the standard Small Cheval menu with burgers, fries, and milkshakes.
Hogsalt (Green Street Smoked Meats, Maude’s Liquor Bar, California Clipper, etc.) opened its second Small Cheval in October in the Loop. The original Small Cheval, a spinoff of Au Cheval in the West Loop, debuted in 2015 in Bucktown. Au Cheval is temporarily closed for renovations. It’s scheduled to reopen along Randolph Street on January 17.
Small Cheval will also stay open until 1 a.m. on most days, making it an attractive option for those hanging out past midnight on Wells Street. It’s popular news all around and begs the question: How many more Small Chevals will Chicago see? Meanwhile, Old Town finally has the burger spot its been craving.
Small Cheval, 1345 N. Wells Street, open 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. on Monday through Saturday; 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday.
