No one needs Cinco de Mayo as an excuse for a quality taco and margarita, and Fat Baby Tacos hopes to deliver the goods starting today in River North. The taco shop serves up tacos, burritos, soups, and salads for lunch, dinner, and during late-night hours at 109 W. Hubbard St.

Many bar patrons will find Fat Baby as a convenient option as they stumble down the nightlife-heavy Hubbard Street strip. But Fat Baby is more than a typical late-night spot. It has a small four-table patio that’s also a unique space: it’s covered and is “multi-season,” management says. It’s unclear how comfortable seating will be during January, but for those stuck in their offices it’s a nice option. The interiors feature a dash of Roy Lichtenstein/Jack Kirby-inspired pop art. It also has mirrored ceilings and flatscreen TVs.

Management describes the menu as “chef inspired.” The usual fillings—chicken, steak, carnitas, shrimp, cheese, and veggies—are there. Tacos and burritos come in six different varieties or “flavors” to satisfy gringos, pedantic eaters needing authenticity, and drunkards who just want food ASAP. Varieties break down as “Classic” (cilantro, onion), “Americano” (lettuce, tomato, cheese), “Street” (corn, poblano, green onion), “Rojo” (tomato, poblano), “Spicy” (pickled jalapeño, green cabbage), and “Pico” (mango, onion, pepper). Exclusive late-night items are unlocked after 10 p.m., including pork and veggie tamales and a chorizo & egg burrito. Beer and draft sangria and margaritas are also available.

Fat Baby Tacos shares a connection with Boss Bar, the venerable late-night dive at the corner of Clark and Hubbard. CSG Hospitality manages the two venues, as the company was founded by Colin Stanton and Shay Ghazimoradi. Ghazimoradi’s family owns Boss Bar.
