River North’s Late-Night Spot From Taco Burrito King Opening in May

Big Wig will fill the nocturnal void

The heir to Taco Burrito King in River North, Big Wig Tacos & Burrito, is slated to open on May 15, according to a news release. This is big news for fans of late-night food, as TBK closed in November 2015 at 114 W. Chicago Ave., leaving a gaping void for customers stumbling out of the bars at 2 a.m. needing sustenance. Big Wig was supposed to open in spring 2016, but owner Jose Manolo Estrada needed to find a location, one that he finally snagged at 770 N. LaSalle St., taking over a spot from a quick-fired pizzeria that put up signage yet never opened.

Big Wig’s opening means Estrada’s kingdom has grown with a 40-seat fast-casual restaurant. While cheffy tacos have its place, it’s not at Big Wig. Estrada wants to focus on “unpretentious Mexican street food.” He wants to bring the same Mexican street food he ate while growing up in the Back of the Yards neighborhood to River North. The menu is set up assembly-line style. Bowls now join the tacos, burritos, nachos, and tortas.

It’ll stay open until 6 a.m. on the weekends and 5 a.m. on weekdays. TBK was filled with customers late night. There’s no reason to believe that Big Wig won’t enjoy the same success. Check back later for more information as the opening grows closer.
