Wondering what’s happening to the long-dormant Lakeview building that once housed Melanthios Char House? The Greek restaurant closed in October 2014, leaving the unique building on Broadway, a few blocks south of Belmont, vacant. But in the last week, signage for a French bakery has gone up, and Maison Marcel shall open this summer at 3114 N. Broadway St.

A spokesman called this Lakeview spot their flagship location, hinting that others could be on their way. He described Marcel has a healthy patisserie with salads, sandwiches, and other “casual” dishes making use of house-made bread. They will pour Metric coffee. Harvest Juicery will also provide drinks.

There is also a retail component inspired by European markets. Customers will be able to buy organic fruits and veggies, as managment said they want to support local farmers markets. They also want to host events like book presentations and art exhibits.

The Medditerrnean feel of Char House will be replaced by an interior designed by Avril Zayas. This is her first project, as she's worked on Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises projects including Ema and Beatrix in River North, as well as Summer House in Lincoln Park.

That stretch of Broadway continues to transform with the addition of Mariano’s. Come back in the coming weeks for more details.
