Michelin Unveils Chicago's 2018 Bib Gourmands

Longman & Eagle is among the 54 Chicago restaurants on Michelin’s 2018 Bib Gourmand list, released on Friday morning. The total number of recipients increased by two compared to last year. Longman’s inclusion is eye-opening because for the first time in seven years, the Logan Square restaurant won’t have a Michelin star. While the Bib Gourmand list highlights value, the more-coveted stars won’t be released until next week.

This year’s list of 54 included eight newcomers besides Longman & Eagle: Jason Vincent’s Logan Square hit, Giant; Thai and Danielle Dang’s Vietnamese comeback story in Pilsen, HaiSous; the creative Indian dishes from Mango Pickle in Edgewater; Diana Dávila’s Mexican gem Mi Tocaya Antojeria in Logan Square; the British savory pies and beer from Pleasant House Pub in Pilsen; a food truck owner’s first restaurant, Quiote in Logan Square; and the health-conscious chain True Food Kitchen in River North.

While the list grew by two restaurants, six restaurants on 2017’s list failed to make the cut this year. Bill Kim’s Belly Shack closed in Bucktown, and Matthias Merges closed both of his Yusho restaurants in Chicago. Via Lima tried to reinvent itself as more casual, but all closed in North Center. Riccardo Trattoria in Lincoln Park and TAC Quick in Lakeview were also cut. Balena, the rustic Lincoln Park gem that burned down in August, also was stricken.

The Bib Gourmands reward "quality restaurants that have menu items that offer two courses and a glass of wine or dessert for $40 or less (excluding tax and gratuity)." Restaurant owners, including the owners of San Soo Gab San, have said the honor often attracts new customers.
