A favorite destination for vegans in Chicago is on the move this April. But fret not, Kitchen 17 fans won’t have to travel too far. Ownership announced on Wednesday that they signed a lease around the corner from their current location at Briar Place and Broadway Street in Lakeview. The site for the new Kitchen 17 at 3132 N. Broadway St. is larger and they’re planning a full bar and to brew their own beer.

Big News At Kitchen 17! About 4 years ago I started Kitchen 17 with the intent of having a cool sandwich shop. A shop...

Though Kitchen 17’s meat- and dairy-free offerings have expanded since owner Don Clements opened some four years ago, Clements lamented about the lack of space inside his tiny Lakeview storefront. The new location will allow him and his staff to cook up new dishes. Over the years, they’ve branched out from sandwiches to more dishes including a vegan version of Chicago deep-dish pizza. The pizza isn’t part of the regular menu and offered as a special, though Clements has offered vegans to call ahead if they’re eager to try one.

The 2,200-square-foot space, neighboring Wilde Bar & Restaurant, was home to Sabor Cubano Restaurant before the Cuban spot closed amidst fraud allegations in 2014. Serving alcoholic drinks could elevate Kitchen 17, as other popular vegan restaurants including Chicago Diner in Boystown and Mana Food Bar in Wicker Park already serve booze. Clements said he and his business partner will reveal more in the coming weeks. They’re targeting an April 1 opening.
