Bridgeport's loss is Pilsen's gain, as Pleasant House Pub soft opened today. The larger former Nightwood space allows for a larger kitchen where they'll prepare items other than their signature savory pies. Look for sandwiches and a Friday fish fry, according to the Tribune, which first reported the opening. Of course, there's also a pub aspect — focusing on brews supplied by Whiner Beer, a Back of the Yards brewery that opened in November.
Owner Art Jackson described today's opening as soft. Jackson closed Pleasant House Bakery, an Eater 38 stalwart, on June 11 and said he wanted a space for a larger British-influenced menu, as well as for those Royal Pies. Nightwood, also a former Eater 38 mainstay, closed in July 2015.
Pleasant House Pub, 2119 S. Halsted St., (773) 523-7437, open 10 a.m. until "late" on Tuesday though Sunday; counter cafe service from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily; kitchen closes at 10 p.m. daily. Late-night menu coming. Closed Monday.
