Cemitas Puebla and their delicious Mexican sandwiches are coming to Hyde Park. Owner Tony Anteliz confirmed that they've taken over the space that formerly housed Packed, the short-lived dumpling shop the closed in May. Anteliz doesn't have an opening date, but said Cemitas could open in a few months.
"We are so excited to be part of such a great and diverse community and look forward to being part of the Hyde Park community for a very long time," Anteliz wrote via email.
The Hyde Park community is unique, filled with University of Chicago students and long-time residents. Many speak sternly about their desire to protect the integrity of their neighborhood. Some cited Packed ownership's inability to understand the community —and perceived high prices— as why the restaurant failed.
The original Cemitas Puebla opened in 2002 in Humboldt Park and lasted 13 years before Anteliz closed the restaurant. A second Cemitas Puebla continues to serve tortas and tacos on Fulton Market, and there's also an extended pop-up in Logan Square. That community credibility could help Anteliz and Cemitas Pueblas succeed in Hyde Park.
