Great Central Brewing Co. hopes to open a brewery with a 150- to 180-seat tap room later this summer, joining other nearby breweries including Goose Island, All Rise and Like Minds on the Near West Side, close to the United Center. They'll offer drinkers 10 to 30 beers in the tap room — from a variety of breweries, as this is Chicago's first contract brewery.

What does that mean? It's a lower-cost option for craft brewers to ramp up their production, using Great Central's 32,000-square foot facility to make their beer. Great Central officials estimate they'll brew about 125,000 barrels annually.

They're still working on renderings for the tap room, but it's expected to take up 4,000 square-feet at 221 N. Wood St. The opening was pushed back from its original timeframe, but it should be unveiled to the public by the end of the summer.
