After tumbling to number 26 on last year's World's 50 Best list, Grant Achatz's recently-renovated flagship gained more than half of those spots back in 2016. About a month following a huge restaurant of the year award win at the James Beard Foundation Awards, Alinea was named the 15th best restaurant in the world at the 2016 edition of the maligned but still powerful World's 50 Best Restaurants awards in New York City on Monday evening. It is once again the only Chicago restaurant to grace the list.
Alinea ranked as high as seventh in 2012 and ninth in 2014, but fell 17 spots last year. The climb adds to what's shaping up as a massive year for Achatz and team, who won the aforementioned James Beard Award, reopened following a near-complete reinvention of the flagship, and opened their first casual restaurant, Roister, in the last three months alone.
