—After recently opening a Lincoln Square location (with buzzy cocktail bar The Sixth), Roots Handmade Pizza is heading to an undisclosed Lakeview location next, the Tribune reports. Reps will not confirm if it's at the long-vacant Buca Di Beppo space at 2941 N. Clark St. that they were reportedly working on in May 2014. Roots is also hoping to expand to South Loop and the burbs.
—The River North location of Rick Bayless' street food eatery XOCO is closed through at least Saturday for repairs, according to social media, due to a small fire on the roof on Monday that was reported by the Tribune. The Wicker Park outpost is unaffected.
—Pi Gallery Bar, the pizza, art and beer spot on the second floor of 738 N. Clark St., appears to be done. The phone line is disconnected, it's been closed during hours it's supposed to be open, and the space has appeared on the real estate market. No one associated with the restaurant has returned messages. The Mercadito Counter space on the first floor is also vacant.
—Paul Kahan and co. have hired their new beer director for the Publican wing of One Off Hospitality. Adam Vavrick will run the beer programs at The Publican, Publican Quality Meats, and the forthcoming Publican Tavern at O'Hare.
—Steakbar, the meaty Old Town collaboration between Four Corners Tavern Group and Brendan Sodikoff's Hogsalt, will now open on April 14 at 1500 N. Wells St.
—Mindy Segal's first line of marijuana edibles will be available at Illinois dispensaries beginning next month, it was revealed in a New York Times magazine story. Check out the entire Q&A with Chicago's sweets queen for more details.
