Logan Square's Dos Urban Cantina earned effusive praise from Tribune critic Phil Vettel, who left charmed by the Mexican cuisine served by Rick Bayless alums Brian Enyart and Jennifer Jones. Vettel further reinforced the Bayless connection when he wrote that Dos Urban, which opened in November, is "the most important Mexican restaurant to open in Chicago since Topolobampo" in his three-star review.
Vettel falls hard for the Mexican-inspired cooking from the husband-and-wife combo, calling the seafood dishes "irresistible." The street-style corn won Vettel over: "Not only is it delicious, it also embraces three representations of corn, each a bedrock of Mexican cooking; it's a very thoughtful dish."
Meanwhile, the meats also earned Vettel's attention, as he highlighted Enyart's playfulness as he swapped beef for pork for the pibil and the nod to Poland with the carnitas that come with sauerkraut and buttered potatoes resting on a tomatillo sauce. Jones' desserts also made Vettel happy, and he described the chocolate cake as "a black hole of deliciousness, from which hunger cannot escape." Dos Urban Cantina also earned a spot on Vettel's list of 50 top restaurants which the Trib published last week. It's the first time he's penned such rankings.
