Gene's Sausage Shop Shutters Belmont Location After 36 Years In

Gene's Sausage Shop and Delicatessen has sold and closed their Belmont Avenue location, shifting focus to business at their multi-story spot in Lincoln Square. Nadig Newspapers reported that Gene's shuttered on Jan. 15 after selling the space to Carnicerias Jimenez, an eight-shop Mexican grocery chain with two locations in Chicago and six in the suburbs.

Gene's, known for its Polish items, occupied the Belmont location for 36 years. They reinvented themselves after opening their Lincoln Square spot that includes a rooftop patio with beer and grilled sausages. Carnicerias, like Gene's, sells meats, as well as prepared foods, including tacos.

Andrew Zimmern even visited the shop for "Bizarre Foods" to sample some Polish blood sausage. Check out the video below.
