Noted pizza and party enthusiast Andrew W.K. will headline a new event called the Chicago Pizza Summit. Sponsored by Old Style beer and the Empty Bottle, it's got all the hallmarks of a street fest mixed with pizza. Chicagoist first shared the details about the 21+ event, pegged for April 3 at 1st Ward at Chop Shop.
Organizers haven't shared the lineup, but expect pizzas from 12 different establishments. It doesn't look like Andrew W.K. will perform music, instead he'll deliver a keynote speech. He penned an impassioned love letter to pizza in 2014 in The Village Voice, producing quotes like "if pizza brings you joy, then by all means, love that pizza like your life depends on it. Because it does." The guy even has a guitar shaped like a pizza.
It's still unclear how W.K.'s New York residency will affect his take on whether Chicago deep-dish pizza is "real" pizza. Many have chimed in, even late-Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia who "ruled" in 2014 that deep-dish pizza didn't fit his definition. Hopefully his replacement will be a bit more (pizza) progressive.
As for the event, they'll feature sessions at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. for unlimited pizza and five drink tickets. Admission's $35, and tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. on Friday.
