Level up on beer and nostalgia

Replay Beer & Bourbon opened up over the weekend in the Headquarters Lakeview space.

Over the weekend, Replay Beer & Bourbon formally opened in Lakeview/Lincoln Park, retaining a similar beer and vintage arcade video game concept as the previous tenant. After an ugly legal battle involving former business partners, Replay has rebranded the space that once housed Headquarters Beercade.

The space was given a bit of a retro facelift, featuring the same dose of nostalgia that brings customers to video game bars. Art on the walls and outside features a familiar set of characters from Ms. Pac-Man, Spider-Man and Boba Fett. Centipede and Street Fighter also make appearances on propaganda-like murals outside. The games are free to play.

There’s 50 video and pinball games inside and new additions include a two-player Super Mario Bros. machine, Wayne Gretzky’s 3D Hockey and Ghostbusters Pro Edition pinball. Besides the bourbon and beer, there’s a selection of five signature cocktails. Headquarters didn’t serve food at this space and Replay also doesn’t have a menu for their new location.

Replay is owned by LKH Management, which has Replay beer arcade locations in Boystown and Andersonville. LKH has come in, joining former Headquarters' partner Mark Kwiatkowksi. LKH also owns other Lakeview/Boystown establishments including Hydrate, Elixir and Lark. They’ll bring in DJs on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights starting on Nov. 25.

The new space is a lot like the old space. Of course, the old space tried to evoke memories of machines munching on quarters inside 1980/1990s video game arcades. Is it too cliched to write "what’s old is new again?" Probably. Check out the drink list below.

Replay Beer & Bourbon, 2833 N. Sheffield Ave., (773) 665-5660, open 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Monday through Thursday; 3 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Friday; noon to 3 a.m. on Saturday; and noon to 2 a.m. on Sunday.
