One of Chicago’s best places for gyros is closing at the end of the month. Gyros On The Spit, a casual family-friendly restaurant spot that dates back to 1973, will shutter in Lakeview on Oct. 30. Ownership cited increased rent and property taxes for the closure.

To our dearest customers/supporters, It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will be closing our doors for good on...

The original iteration of the beloved restaurant shuttered in 2000, ending a 27-year run at 3138 N. Broadway Ave. They reopened two and a half years ago at their current location at 2826 N. Lincoln Ave. The current property has been listed for months on the real estate market.

Many in the restaurant industry pointed to Gyros On The Spit as the best gyros in the city. The food was good enough to earn a spot on Eater Chicago’s Essential Greek Restaurants in Chicago. While not as famous for flaming cheese, customers were already mourning the pending loss.

"I am so thankful I got to experience the best Greek food in Chicago! We will miss seeing you all!" one Facebook user wrote.
