Doug Sohn's been working on his delivery man conversation schtick as part of a promotion. The Hot Doug's owner will deliver his Atomic Pizza collaboration with Piece Pizza to two lucky customers next Monday night (March 16), who will get their orders for free.
"Tipping is not a town in China, my friend," Sohn said.
The promotion will last from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Will Sohn wear his customary Hot Doug's T-Shirt and Zubaz when he delivers? He's unsure, as he hasn't sported a Hot Doug's shirt since the shutter. Imagine wearing the same ensemble six days a week since 2001.
Saturday was Piece's busiest in 13 1/2 years of business, said Piece owner Bill Jacobs, as Sohn's popularity fueled the surge. The winter is traditionally slower for restaurants, but the "Atomic Pizza" has been a boon for Piece. Jacobs used a celebrity pizza delivery man before when Cheap Trick lead guitarist (and Piece co-owner) Rick Nielsen delivered pies: "We called it rockstar delivery," Jacobs said.
This time Sohn will surprise a customer with a pizza which uses the same "keep it simple" formula that he employed at Hot Doug's. The spice from the Atomic Sausage (featuring a mix of serrano, habañero and jalapeño peppers ground by butchers at Columbus Meat Market) "gets in and gets out," said Jacobs. The pepper jack cheese also gives a little kick which is tempered by the sweetness from the caramelized onions.
