Is Ricobene's breaded steak sandwich the best sandwich in the world? That's what USA Today writer Ted Berg alleges, claiming the South Side favorite is underappreciated — both nationally and within Chicago.
Berg lauds the Chicago-style hot giardiniera that accompanies a crisp breading that compliments the tender fried steak topped with melted mozzarella. Berg calls Ricobene's specialty "the perfect sandwich."
The breaded-steak sandwich failed to find a spot on Eater Chicago's Most Iconic Sandwiches in Chicago. It's tough sledding to break into the list which features 16 Chicago classics.
Keep in mind, Berg's a sportswriter, with an occasional fondness for writing about television. He touts three years working at a deli and his travels sampling stadium food as credentials for making such a claim.
But is Berg correct — is the breaded-steak sandwich the best in the world? Is it even the best in Chicago? Share us your #hottake in the comments.
