South Side Net Gain: Honey 1 BBQ Likely Moving to Bronzeville

After nine years in business, owner says he'll likely shutter original Bucktown barbecue joint after opening new location.

Bronzeville's gaining a Honey 1 BBQ, and that could mean the end of the original location on Western Avenue.

Owner Robert Adams Sr. tells The Reader he's likely to shutter the original location (where "the smoke is no joke") at 2241 N. Western Ave. once the new location at 746 E. 43rd St. opens. They're not sure when the Bronzeville spot will open; they've encountered difficulties with permits due to the fire and smoke involved in the business. Once they cut through the red tape, they'll be ready to served smoked meats to customers within a week. Adams has not yet responded to inquiries.

Adams, an Arkansas native, opened Honey 1 BBQ on Western Avenue in 2005, bringing ribs, tips and links familiar to Chicago's South Side to Bucktown. The loss should leave a giant barbecue-pit-sized whole in the hearts of North Side barbecue lovers.
