The gourmet cupcake trend has lost a major chain, as Crumbs Bake Shop abruptly closed all of its locations last night, the Wall Street Journal reported. 48 Crumbs shops were open in the country and two were left in Chicago after the River North location shuttered.

The NY-based Crumbs first came to Chicago in January 2011 and began expanding six months later. Signs of trouble appeared not long after the chain went public three years ago and its situation looked bleak just this May. Other chain cupcake spots, including Magnolia and Sprinkles, are still open to satisfy that gourmet cupcake craving.
