In rather surprising news, Mark Steuer will no longer be involved in operations at both Carriage House and The Bedford. Mike Galen, who is executive chef at The Bedford, will take over the same position at Carriage House. Steuer will continue to be a partner at the restaurant, but will not have involvement in daily operations.
Partner Matt Mering states that Steuer asked to pursue other opportunities several months ago. Whether that's to concentrate more on G & C Pantry Co. or a new restaurant concept is unclear at this time. Mering points out that Steuer led the restaurant to great success and that he is happy he will be staying on as a partner.
In a statement, Steuer says that the decision to walk away from the daily work at the restaurant was not easy, but emphasized that he wants to see the opportunities through that are available to him.
Carriage House was a passion project for Steuer for a number of years, with the food of his native Charleston, S.C. driving the inspiration. He had tried to set up a similar restaurant well before joining The Bedford in 2011. Carriage House has received many accolades since opening, including being chosen as best new restaurant by Esquire Magazine in 2013.
