Although the Umami Burger interior is still skeletal, expect construction to finish in time for Chicago's first outpost of the popular LA-based forward-thinking chain to open sometime next month in Wicker Park. Contractors will enclose the walls this week and install the appliances and furniture soon after.
When complete, the main room (below) will house a full 16-seat bar at entry, separated from banquettes by a half wall, with tables and a round corner booth behind. The decor will feature a music theme: a stage will live in the front right corner and sometimes feature live music, workers will install a turntable on the bar and vintage Japanese album covers above the booths, and a contest is sourcing pieces from Wicker Park artists. Contractors will soon replace the current facade with full retractable windows.
The menu is still in development (new items tailored to the location will join the core menu) and staffing the location is a work in progress, as Umami higher-ups are still looking for a chef, a general manager, and other positions. They are also already roaming the city to scout additional locations, but expect the first to open within a month on Milwaukee Avenue.
