One year in and The Refinery, a gastropub concept in the former Old Town Brasserie space on Wells, is closed. The restaurant's voicemail says "operations are currently closed for business," the website and Facebook pages have vanished, and the space has surfaced on the real estate market. Ownership and staff could not be reached for comment.
The restaurant and bar opened last July with former Untitled sous chef Lawrence Letrero manning the kitchen and a pastry chef, Hetty Arts, with experience at Eleven Madison Park. But it never seemed to find its footing and was the subject of a scathing review in the Reader in September. Stay tuned to see what happens to the space next.
[UPDATE: Despite the fact that the space is on the market, a sign on the door says the restaurant is reconcepting and making "significant changes" and reopening with a "new exciting and affordable concept." Read the whole thing below.]
