It turns out that Mindy Segal's recent breakfast and baked goods launch at Hot Chocolate isn't just a preview of her planned bakery—it will essentially become the bakery itself. Official word is coming down that Segal has decided not to open her highly-anticipated Hot Chocolate Bakery in Logan Square, but fans can now try all of her new baked goods at her original Bucktown restaurant, which has changed its just-launched bakery and breakfast service from a summer popup to a permanent addition.
Segal, one of the top pastry chefs in the country, calls the decision a "conscious choice" in a statement. "I was humbled to receive so much support surrounding an all new-project, but ultimately this is what's best for my business at the present time," she says.
She has been working on many new projects, including her cookie cookbook (due out next year) and expanded catering operations, so she decided to consolidate the bakery and her original restaurant into one and "slow it down a bit."
Hot Chocolate's new breakfast service began yesterday, featuring an array of sweet and savory croissants, danishes, bagels, quiches, cookies, coffees and more for dine-in or to-go, and expect more items and amenities in the future. The restaurant now keeps cafe-esque all-day hours on Tuesdays through Fridays (7 a.m. until dinner service begins at 5 p.m.) and will eventually add a fresh bread program, Wi-Fi, newspapers, expanded hours and more, bringing a new daytime cafe and bakery option from a James Beard winner to a familiar setting.
There's no word yet on what will come to her Logan Square space, but considering what surrounds it on that exploding Logan Square block, someone should snatch it up quickly. And now you can snatch up her baked goods permanently in Bucktown.
