5411 Empanadas Wicker Park Targeting Late-May Opening

Photo: Eater Chicago

Wicker Park bar-hoppers and revelers are about a month away from getting a new late-night dining spot. The second 5411 Empanadas storefront, taking over the long-shuttered J. Wellington's space, is planning to stay open until midnight during the week, 2 a.m. on Fridays and 3 a.m. on Saturdays. It's on the same block as Trenchermen, Chop Shop, Subterranean and Estelle's.

The new spot will be larger than their Lakeview location, seating about 26 guests, but have a similar set-up. Their already popular empanada flavors will be on the menu in addition to some new combinations. Ownership obtained a liquor license, so expect five beers on draft as well as the popular Argentine spirit Fernet, available to be mixed or as a shot. Other options include Argentine wines and housemade sodas.

They're also considering adding salads to the menu as well as a few breakfast items. Owner Nico Ibarzabel tells Eater he's always been a fan of Wicker Park, so it was natural for the store's expansion. They are aiming for a late-May opening.
