The good times may be over at Nouveau Tavern. The Chicago Police Department shut down the purple New Orleans-themed lounge and restaurant just before 8 p.m. on Friday evening for operating without licensing, according to Officer Janel Sedevic of the Chicago P.D.
"The establishment was operating without food and liquor licenses and was shut down," Sedevic says. "This action was taken with prior consultation of the local liquor commission and business and consumer affairs."
Additionally, sources say that current Nouveau ownership is ineligible for a liquor license because of a felony conviction and the establishment was operating under previous ownership's expired licensing. Police responded to a complaint last week which lead to an investigation and the subsequent closure.
Handmade signs appeared on Nouveau Tavern's windows over the weekend saying it's "closed temporarily" and to call the restaurant. The phone line goes straight to voicemail and ownership has not yet submitted a comment or statement. Nouveau Tavern opened at the former Ai Sushi space on Ontario in early October.
