When asked about expansion plans less than two years ago, Union Sushi + Barbeque Bar owner Mike Schatzman said "we have to wait until it feels right." It must feel right now, as Schatzman and Chef Chao have a new space and concept, The Franklin Room, in line for a late-summer opening.
The Franklin Room will be a "proper city tavern" and attempt to bring back Chicago's history of eating, drinking, and social meeting halls. It'll serve throwback comfort food—think smoked fish and meats, pot pies, and "elevated" fish and chips—along with a "strong bar program" focusing on independent distillers and rare releases.
The 65-seat space is below street level in the former Burger Joint on Franklin Street. Expect the long-awaited follow-up to their popular first restaurant to open before fall.
