It doesn't snow like this in L.A., but starting today you can get doughnuts like they make in the City of Angels. Stan's Donuts & Coffee, a partnership with local bread guru Rich Labriola, opened the doors this morning next to the Damen El stop in Wicker Park. "This is truly a doughnut-coffee shop," Labriola says. "Chicago doesn't have many of them."

Using Stan's recipe as a base, Labriola is utilizing his years in the bread world to create his take on classic doughnuts. The menu features three sections: "The Standards" (glazed, chocolate glazed, chocolate cake), "Specialties" (old fashion, cinnamon roll, filled varieties), and changing "Dough Boy's Best" options. A digital menu board behind the counter shows available flavors of the day.

Stan's serves Intelligentsia coffee drinks, teas, and other bottled beverages. The small space is reminiscent of a 50s diner, with 22 seats at a communal table and window counter inside the landmarked building that used to house Skewerz.

It'll open at 6:30 a.m. on weekdays (7 a.m. weekends) and stay open until at least 9 p.m. Expect gelato in the summer, chef collaboration flavors down the line, and more locations soon, beginning with the upcoming new Northwestern Hospital building in Streeterville.
