The folks at Pompei Pizza want another crack at conquering Lakeview, as the chain aims to return in January to a familiar space.

Signage has already started popping up outside the building at 2955 N. Sheffield Ave., where Pompei served up slices of sheet pizza and pasta plates until December 2012. The building remained empty until fall 2013 when the most recent tenant, City Dough, opened. City Dough abruptly closed in May, with the owners claiming they'd reopen in three to five weeks for a remodeling.

But instead, Paul Larson, manager of the Pompei's flagship location on Taylor Street, confirmed that the revered Little Italy bakery would return to the same building in January. There won't be too much work done on the interiors. Larson simply said that "we wanted to be back" when explaining the reasons for the return.

Pompei's owners in 2004 sold the location on Wellington and Sheffield to DMK Restaurants, which operated the restaurant until it closed in 2012 after talk of a lawsuit. After a spat of downsizing, there are currently three Pompei locations, as well as Jut's @ Pompei, the event space that neighbors the Taylor Street location.
