If you've ever wondered which independent restaurants make the most money—and how much money those restaurants make—Restaurant Business Online has the list for you. And if you ever need reminding that trendy chef-driven restaurants aren't the most profitable, remember their story, which notes that the restaurants on the list "always looks like passion, dedication and hard work."
Gibson's Bar & Steakhouse—which Eater readers voted as the best steakhouse in Chicago earlier this year—was the top-grossing independent restaurant in town, weighing in at No. 8 with a whopping $22,397,732 in sales and an average check size of $71. Joe's Seafood, Prime Steak and Stone Crab clocked in next at No. 10 ($21,000,000).
All in all, seven Chicago restaurants made the list in addition to two suburban spots. The Gibson's group goldmine also placed Hugo's Frog Bar & Fish House (31), Quartino (59), and Gibson's Rosemont (42), while Bob Chinn's Crab House in Wheeling (18; just a $38 average check size), Harry Caray's Italian Steakhouse (47), Shaw's Crab House (58), and Greek Islands (95) also placed.
