Giovanni Donancricchia, owner of Albano's Pizzeria in Cicero, was shot and killed inside his restaurant last night in an apparent robbery attempt, according to the Tribune. Donancricchia was shot moments after his wife made it out alive and was pronounced dead at 12:56 a.m. He had been in the restaurant business for 25 years.
Albano's Pizzeria was featured on Chicago's Best and the Travel Channel. The restaurant was known for its pizza puff, which Serious Eats named "The Biggest and Best Pizza Puff in Chicago" in 2009. Police are gathering evidence and reviewing surveillance footage in the case. Donancricchia was 64.
