Bub City isn't the only former River North staple to rise from the grave. Bar Umbriago, which opened less than a year ago, will close up by the end of the month to make way for the return of Centro Ristorante. A 1990's Italian see-and-be-seen staple, the reincarnation will feature a similar menu and almost exact features as the original except for the chef. Joe Farina (Rosebud, Cafe Bionda, Salatino's) will head up the kitchen, bringing classic Italian fare with him.
River North is suddenly becoming an Italian hotspot, with Centro joining Piccolo Sogno Due, RPM Italian, and Siena Tavern for choices in the booming neighborhood. Competition for business should be fierce.
At Centro, look for the same sign, Marlon Brando mural, and phone number as the original. 190 total seats will fill out the space, including sidewalk patio. The relaunch is set for mid-May, whether the same clientele is there when they reopen will be something to watch.
