Original Intelligentsia Closed for Remodel

There's no debating the boom of artisan coffee shops in the local market lately, as a new one seems to be popping up every week. The one that many people credit with starting the trend, the original Intelligentsia on Broadway, closed up for remodeling yesterday.

Opened in 1995, the location might be playing catchup to many of the new challengers. Although growing to four current local locations (12 national by year's end), with more constantly on the way including next to the upcoming Plum Market, it was time to overhaul the original. Upon reopening April 18, it will feature twice the seats, new furniture, varying menus, a rebuilt main coffee bar and a second bar in back.

18 years is a senior citizen in artisan coffee shop years, and Intelligentsia hopes reconstructive surgery will lead this senior to the fountain of youth on April 18.
