Today marks the official opening of Sportsman's Club, an intimate and gamey cocktail bar on Western and Augusta. Drawing inspiration from the original Ukrainian dive in the space, designer Kevin Heisner has made over the 35-seat interior with stuffed deer heads, antlers, and wood chess and checker sets in the tables.
Four cocktail offerings will change daily, many focusing on apertifs and utilizing an amaro machine, as well as a signature "Sportsman's Cocktail." Ask for the off-menu shot of the day; a mix of amaro and fernet branca was featured earlier in the week.
Just five beers, from Old Style to Grande Dame, encompass the beer selection. Packaged goods, such as Old Granddad whiskey, wine, and bitters, are available to go via a front cabinet next to the bar.
A reel-to-reel sound system and a small rear patio (opening in the spring) round out the experience. The location, on the border of Ukrainian Village and Humboldt Park, is beginning to draw more projects (such as Leghorn across the street) as well as an industry crowd.
The official opening is today at 5 p.m.
